Top destinations in Bulgaria

The country of Bulgaria - geographically, to the south-east of the Balkan Peninsula, bordering Romania in the north, Turkey in the south, and the Black Sea in the east - is a region of contrast, both in its landscape, and its climate, seasonally.

The popular resort towns on the Black Sea coast, for example, experience hot, dry, summers, with an average temperature of more than 23 degrees Celsius, making this an ideal location for a traditional beach holiday.

Elsewhere in the country, the picturesque and scenic mountain ranges - the Balkans, themselves, the Rhodope, Rila and Pirin ranges - experience abundant snowfall during the winter months, making them equally ideal for a skiing, or snowboarding, holiday.

Attractions

Sunny Beach is the largest, and most developed, of the Black Sea coastal resorts, with the longest - roughly five miles in length - and widest beach.

The gently sloping beach is sandy in nature, clean - with an EU Blue Flag for cleanliness - and safe. The area offers a host of opportunities for water, and other, sports, many activities for children, and a range of affordable bars, restaurants and cafes. Further to the north, Golden Sands, once known as "Ouzounkoum", or "Long Sands", is another popular tourist destination.

The three main ski resorts in Bulgaria - Bansko, Borovets and Pamporova - are all within easy reach of the capital city, Sofia, and the second city, Plovdiv. Bansko, for example, is approximately 100 miles away, by road, from Sofia, and in very close proximity to the Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site

Bulgaria offers a feast of natural and cultural attractions, including, for example, the spa resorts of Bankya, and Velingrad, the Central Balkan, Pirin and Rila National Parks, amongst many others, and Bulgarian cuisine is an attraction, in itself. Greek, Turkish and Yugoslavian influences can be detected in the staple diet of Bulgaria, which features, of course, yoghurt, but also salads, kebabs, and some quite spicy meat and fish dishes. Rakia, a potent liquor made from grapes, or plums, is a popular accompaniment to the first course of a meal.

The diversity of the landscape, a host of cultural and natural attractions, and a climate that can be enjoyed, in equal measure, by summer or winter visitors, means that demand for holiday apartments in Bulgaria is high. Popular areas include the regions surrounding capital, Sofia, the former capital, Veliko Tarnovo, and Varna, on the Black Sea coast, all of which are served by an excellent network of air, road and rail links.
