In Hungary, the car itself is insured instead of the driver, but some policies have restrictions on the driver’s age, policyholder age, gender and marital status that can influence the price.
Third party liability car insurance (kötelező felelőség biztosítás) is required and only registered cars can be insured.
When driving in Hungary, a proof of insurance payment (bank transfer or a yellow postal cheque receipt) along with the car’s registration papers must be carried in the vehicle at all times.
Types of vehicle insurance
The two main types are as follows:
- Third party liability vehicle insurance (kötelező felelőség biztosítás) Bodily injury liability and property damage liability.
- A comprehensive insurance (CASCO). Insurance companies offer different types of comprehensive insurance. It varies from basic insurance, also known as mini-CASCO to a fully comprehensive policy known as teljes-CASCO.
