• Your problem as an American is that it is most unlikely you will be able to work legally without citizenship of one of the EU member states.
  There are multitudes of English-mother-tongue Brits and Irish who are able to work legally and without the hassles that are involved in employing a non-EU citizen.
  The "new" Eastern European states are reputed to be less rigid in their application of the rules than the older members, and Spain also employs large numbers of illegal Americans and Australians.
